1. Introduction and Scope of Verification
Bureau Veritas has been engaged to provide verification services to Reynolds American and its subsidiaries. This Verification Statement applies to the Reynolds American 2008 Corporate Social Responsibility Report (the ‘Social Report’). The preparation of the Report and its content is the responsibility of Reynolds American. Bureau Veritas’ responsibility is to provide verification over selected sections of the Social Report and underlying processes within the scope set out below.

The scope of our work was determined following discussions with Reynolds American and is as follows:
1. We considered the alignment of CSR auditing and reporting activity undertaken by Reynolds American for the period January 2006 to December 2007 against the key requirements of AA1000.
2. We reviewed the Social Report, including the ‘Stakeholder Dialogues,’ to ensure its consistency with the events of the stakeholder dialogue sessions.
3. We reviewed the GRI Indicators reported by Reynolds American and its operating companies.

Reynolds American and its operating companies are committed to Corporate Social Responsibility. The companies will continue to engage stakeholders; to act, where appropriate, on their ideas and suggestions; and to report results. Reynolds American and its operating companies have focused CSR efforts against seven main issues, or planks, to address the core expectations stakeholders have for our businesses. This logo, which symbolizes stakeholder engagement as a driver of the initiatives around each of the seven CSR planks, will be used to report on CSR programs and results.
